Phoenix is growing fast! It has recently moved into fifth place as one of the most populous cities in the United States. Every year many people move here looking for a new place to call home. Although there are lots of restaurants and options when it comes to food, many have perceived there to be a lack of black owned restaurants or food tailored to the black community.
Many did not realize the amount of options available here in the valley until a post was made on twitter back in April.
Many, including myself, bookmarked this tweet for future reference, or future meals. However, there are many who do not have a twitter account who are still in the dark. So, this blog post if for you to share with them and support the local restaurants below: A List Of Black Owned Restaurants In Phoenix, AZ. The first few are places I have tried or visited.
Mrs. White’s Golden Rule Cafe
Address: 808 E Jefferson St, Phoenix, AZ 85034
Mrs. White’s has been a part of the Phoenix community for over 50 years. This restaurant should be put on your “must visit” list ASAP! You can find all of your traditional southern food here. No matter where you are from, Mrs. White’s will remind you of home.
Address: 1712 E Broadway Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85040
Although I have not been into the restaurant, I have ordered food from JL Smokehouse through UberEats (it is available for delivery if you are lazy sometimes like me). When you order food from this restaurant, be prepared to be full. My recommendation: Beef Smoked Sausage, BBQ Beans, Mac and Cheese, and Hot Links. One yelp reviewer said this place is good enough to make you want to slap yo mama… I don’t know about all that. For me, that’s a life or death situation (my mama aint having none of that). But I agree with the sentiment.
Trapp Haus BBQ
Address: 511 E Roosevelt St, Phoenix, AZ 85004
Some have said that this place makes the best barbecue they have had in their life. Others put it in the top 2-3. Either way, whether it is ranked 1, 2, or 3, this is high praise and definitely a place that should be visited.
Lo-Lo’s Chicken & Waffles
Address: 1220 S Central Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85004
California has Roscoe’s, we have Lo-Lo’s. And some who have tasted both have said that Lo-Lo’s is superior. That is big praise! Now, the names on the menu are puns, so don’t blame me for my next sentence… My go to meal here is the Double-D two juicy breasts with one delicious waffle. You can’t go wrong!
Honey Bear’s BBQ
Address: 2824 N Central Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85004
Honey Bear’s is located right smack dab in the center of midtown, on the southwest corner of Central & Thomas. It is kind of hidden, but shouldn’t be too hard to find. I have eaten here multiple times. If it weren’t for my work location moving out of this area, you’d probably find me here most of the time. My go-to here: beef brisket sandwich, mac and cheese, and the collard greens.
Address: 3320 W Southern Ave, Unit 120, Phoenix, AZ 85041
Finally, there’s a place to push Wing-Stop out of my wing’s list. Now, on the original list, the Southern Ave location was listed. However, there are multiple locations around the valley. I’ve been to the East Thomas location and it was fire! You should already know the go to flavor, but for those who don’t know: Lemon Pepper!
