Music has a way of coming into your life when you least expect it. Recently, I came across a track that stuck in my head a bit—“Sips Tea” by Boston artist (more precisely, Roxbury, Massachusetts), Jefe Replay. This song is smooth with a laid-back beat and an iconic phrase that has been carried by many, “Ain’t Shit Free.” This song pulled me into a window of Jefe Replay’s world, which I couldn’t help but put it on repeat.
My first encounter with Jefe Replay actually came a while back when I found his track “Foreign Exchange” off his 2019 album, Proper Finessments. That song had me hyped ALL THE TIME, honestly. I played it REPEATEDLY. After a while, though, life got super busy, and I lost track of him as an artist. Fast forward to now, and “Sips Tea” brought him right back into my space. I couldn’t believe I hadn’t previously discovered this song released back in 2015. The sound of the track has the feel of timelessness, like it could’ve dropped yesterday.
Naturally, I got curious. What else had he been up to? Has he released more gems since Proper Finessments? Maybe a new album or some collabs? I started digging, excited to see more music when things shifted. Through my searching, I found out that Jefe Replay passed away in November 2022. The news hit like an unexpected shot (punch) to the kidney. Honestly, I do not believe there is anything else I can add to that. The tributes from his peers in the Boston music scene paint a picture of a legend lost too soon. From reading through posts from artists like Millyz and Brandie Blaze, you can feel the weight of his absence. To his family, friends, and fans, I know I may be late but my heart is with you all.
For veteran fans, share your favorite Jefe Replay song in the comments below! For new fans or those who have yet to hear his music, my goal today is to pay tribute by sharing his music with you. If you haven’t heard “Sips Tea” yet, give it a listen (also “Foreign Exchange”). His work deserves to live on, to keep finding new ears. That’s how we honor him!
