“Love Yourself” by Gary Jordan

We made it to the weekend, y’all! Hope the week wasn’t too hard on you. If so, take some time and listen to some new music. Today, we have “Love Yourself” from the South Florida artist, Gary Jordan.

When it comes to this song, I may be a bit biased because it’s an artist from the home section, South Florida. The city was given a shoutout about :44 seconds into the song, and from that point I was hooked. “Came from the bottom, now it’s bada-bing!”

Jordan was inspired to create this song as a message to a younger version of himself. At the beginning of the song, he provides a few points of advice which he learned from his experiences. The song can be seen as a message to other youth with a similar upbringing and background. “Looked for a hero and found out [that] I am him.” Love yourself first before putting your love, interest, time, and effort in other things is the message I take from the track.

Now, stepping back from my bias and giving my honest opinion, I feel the vibes from the beat and the visual, if you’re watching/listening via YouTube, carried the first half of the song over the lyrics. That would be my only criticism. However, at around 1:50 of the song, Jordan brought the energy to close out the song. I understand the message of the song for everyone is to love yourself and such a message can’t be delivered overly aggressive, but it would have been nice to see the energy from that part of the song spread throughout from beginning to end.

Love Yourself is currently available for streaming on Apple Music and Spotify. For more information about Gary Jordan, follow him on Instagram and Twitter.
