A song which seems more complete than most, Cooler by AJ Smith is a song that I believe would fit well in a syndicated radio station’s rotation at this moment. It is radio ready! The song has a steady flow, smooth vocals, and an appealing hook. The song as whole is well put together with a nice “drop and go” divide between the verses and the hook. It has a cool, early 2000’s pop type of vibe.
The song sets the stage from the beginning about a man who is nervous, but trying to calm himself down while he’s with someone he really likes. The character in the song is scared of messing things up. He starts by saying seeking reassurance when he states “I hope that I made a good impression on you.” He quickly offers his crush a better experience in a “redo” or second date if the first one was not impressive enough. However, this time, he will be everything he was not and nothing that he was before. “maybe I can get a redo; And we can meet back here in a day or two; And when I walk through that door next time, I promise I’ll be cooler…” Basically, he’ll make whatever changes he needs to in order to make it work.
Most of us guys have had these feelings. I’ve never made these promises out loud, but understand the feeling of wanting a redo for a failed attempt. I think most of us should be able to relate to the emotions described in the song. The official video (below) does a good job with manifesting the story as well.
